The major in Spanish requires a minimum of 36 credit hours in Spanish.
Spanish 101 and 102 do not count towards the major or minor. The obligatory foundational coursework for the major should include 201, 202, 310, 330 and at least 18 additional credit hours of upper-division (300-400) classes. In upper division courses, majors can choose two different emphases depending on their interests and future career plans:
Humanities and Education Emphasis
Intended for students who plan to become language teachers or continue their studies in graduate school in any discipline in the humanities. In addition to the foundational coursework listed above, this option requires SPAN 353, SPAN 355, SPAN 433 and SPAN 435. These courses may only be substituted with written approval by the Department Head. Additional upper-division courses, as well as a long-term study abroad experience are highly recommended.
Professional Emphasis
Intended for students who plan to use their Spanish skills in a professional field, such as health, international business, etc. In addition to the foundational coursework listed above, this option requires SPAN 308 or SPAN 350, SPAN 444, plus six credits of literature and/ or culture. These courses may only be substituted with written approval by the Department Head. Additional upper-division courses, as well as a long-term study abroad experience are highly recommended.
A minimum grade of “C” is required in all the major courses.
The following schedules are very general. Please contact a Spanish adviser for more specific information.
Students who have a background in modern language study before entering the University should take the Placement Examination to determine the appropriate course in which to enroll. Credit may be obtained for courses exempted upon completion of one course in the department, with a grade of “C” or better, and the payment of the established fee to the Academic Evaluation and Assessment Office. Please see “Modern Language Credit” on page 19 of this catalog for more detailed information.
