Program Information

The Environment and Rural Development Specialization within the Ph.D. in Social Science prepares social scientists to conduct interdisciplinary research addressing complex social, economic, and environmental challenges that influence the growth and sustainability of rural communities. The specialization integrates perspectives across the social sciences to examine factors shaping rural development and environmental conditions.

Areas of study may include the natural and built environment, natural resources, infrastructure, industry, and economic activity. Consistent with the university’s land-grant mission, the specialization emphasizes applying research to education, service, and innovation that promotes improved quality of rural life.

Graduates are prepared for careers in higher education, government, and the private sector, particularly in roles requiring advanced research, analytical, and methodological expertise.
