Program Information
The Rural Well-being Specialization within the Ph.D. in Social Science prepares social scientists to engage in interdisciplinary research focused on complex social challenges that impact the health and quality of life of rural people and their communities. The specialization integrates perspectives across the social sciences to examine factors influencing rural well-being.
Areas of study may include culture, communication, food access, education, engagement in the arts and humanities, healthcare, housing, recreation, safety, transportation, and the availability of professional services. Consistent with the university’s land-grant mission, the specialization emphasizes applying research to education, service, and innovation that promotes improved quality of rural life.
Graduates are prepared for careers in higher education, government, and the private sector, particularly in roles requiring advanced research, analytical, and methodological expertise.
