Program Information

The Aerospace Studies minor provides leadership education and practical experience that prepares students for professional careers in the Air Force, Space Force, and civilian organizations. The minor is open to students in all majors.

The curriculum includes coursework in leadership, management, national security affairs, and the role of air and space power. Students develop leadership, project management, critical thinking, and communication skills through academic instruction and participation in Leadership Laboratory, where students plan, organize, and lead structured activities in a professional environment.

Completion of the Aerospace Studies minor strengthens students’ leadership credentials and prepares them for leadership roles in military and civilian professions.  Students who meet eligibility requirements may pursue a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force or Space Force. Participation in AFROTC does not incur a military service obligation until a student is selected for and accepts a scholarship requiring such commitment or is selected for an enrollment allocation into the Professional Officer Course (POC).

The Aerospace Studies minor consists of academic coursework and Leadership Laboratory. Courses emphasize advanced leadership, management, national security affairs, and preparation for professional service.

Leadership Laboratory provides practical leadership experience through structured training, planning activities, and supervised leadership roles.

Students seeking a commission must complete additional requirements, including attendance at summer Field Training, medical qualification, and passing a physical fitness assessment in accordance with Department of the Air Force standards.

Commission

Students who complete AFROTC and Department of the Air Force commissioning requirements and are selected for commissioning enter the Air Force or Space Force as Second Lieutenants. Graduates serve in a wide range of operational, technical, and leadership career fields essential to national defense. The initial assignment options for Second Lieutenants include:

  1. Enter the Air Force or Space Force and complete the designated technical training prerequisite to the lieutenant’s assigned specialty, e.g., flight training, research and development, management, support functions, etc.
  2. Apply for an Air Force-sponsored graduate study program while serving with full pay as a commissioned officer.

Upon entering the Air Force or Space Force, newly commissioned Second Lieutenants incur an active duty commitment of four years. After initial aviation training, those competing and selected for navigator and air battle management specialties incur a six-year commitment; those selected for pilot training incur a ten-year commitment.

Academic Requirements

AFROTC students must achieve and maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA and receive no lower than a C in all AFROTC courses to continue in the program. Scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in order to retain the scholarship.

United States citizenship is required for commissioning into the Air Force or Space Force. Students will not be allowed to compete for an Enrollment Allocation (EA) or continue in the program beyond their sophomore year without proof of citizenship.

Total Required Credits: 18
