Program Description
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics delivers programs of study leading to the Masters of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Master of Science in Mathematics prepares graduates for positions in industry, teaching, or doctoral programs and the Master of Science in Statistics serves as preparation for a career in research, industry, or education, or as a springboard to more advanced graduate work. The Computational Science and Statistics PhD program provides intensive preparation for careers in research, industry, or academia.

During the first year, complete one of the sequences listed below and pass the corresponding comprehensive exam:

Mathematics with a specialization in statistics
- Complete one of the core sequences listed for the math degree and one of the core sequences listed for the statistics degree, and pass the two corresponding comprehensive exams.
Statistics
Take the two following Core Statistics sequences and pass the corresponding comprehensive exams: - Statistical Inference: Credits: 3
AND Credits: 3 - Regression: Credits: 3
AND Credits: 3

GRE: Not required
TOEFL: For the Masters program, a department requirement of 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, 79-80 Internet-based
For the PhD program, a department requirement of 575 paper-based or 230 computer-based Additional Graduation Requirements
Master’s graduation requirements
- Must pass the comprehensive exam based on the core sequences
PhD graduation requirements
- Must pass a qualifying exam based on the core sequence of the student’s emphasis area
- Must pass written and oral comprehensive exams, as designed by the student’s advisory committee. |
