Program Description
A major in Athletic Training is intended to prepare students for entry into clinical practice as licensed athletic trainers. Athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Upon completion of the curriculum, students will be eligible to challenge the national certifying examination for athletic trainers through the Board of Certification (BOC). The professional portion of the Athletic Training curriculum takes two years to complete and implements competencies and proficiencies as defined by the Education Council of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
In addition to completing the courses required for the curriculum, students will complete clinical experiences at high schools, universities, sports medicine clinics, and medical and rehabilitation clinics under the supervision of preceptors who are appropriately credentialed health care professionals.
Admittance into the professional phase of the athletic training program is based on a competitive application process. Students complete the application process during their sophomore year. Students who are admitted into the athletic training program will complete the program over the course of their final two years at SDSU.
