The graduate programs in the department lead to a Applied Physics or Chemistry Education certificate, the M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry, the M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, or the M.S. or Ph.D in Physics. Research programs exist in condensed matter (materials) physics, health/nuclear physics, analytical/environmental chemistry, biochemistry, chemical education, and organic/natural products chemistry.

The chemistry and biochemistry programs are housed in the Avera Health and Science Center, which provides 100,000 sq. ft. of research and instructional space. The physics programs are housed in Daktronics Engineering Hall, which provides 29,000 sq. ft. of research and instructional space.
