Address from the Interim Dean

Address from the Interim Dean:

Welcome to the Graduate School at South Dakota State University and thank-you for your interest in pursuing graduate studies at SDSU. Graduate study is becoming increasingly important to professional development and career advancement. Graduate students are important to our state, region, nation, and world as an investment in economic and workforce development, by creating knowledge and advancing discoveries, and by serving as mentors and educators for undergraduates and others.

SDSU has a proud tradition of offering a wide variety of excellent graduate programs. As the first land-grant institution in the state, SDSU provides graduate studies in 43 graduate programs encompassing areas such as agriculture, engineering, social sciences, health sciences, education, biological sciences, nursing, computational sciences and statistics, and geospatial sciences.

Graduate courses and exciting research programs abound at SDSU, the state’s only Research University with high research activity as classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.  Graduate education and research programs provided by six academic colleges provide outstanding opportunities for advanced education.

SDSU offers MS, MA, MEd, and PhD programs, as well as the Doctorate of Pharmacy and the Doctorate of Nursing Practice.  Many of the Master’s level programs offer a choice of thesis, design paper, or course-intensive pedagogies. Each graduate student works closely with a faculty committee to develop a research program and plan of study to match the student’s interests.

Research opportunities are expanding at SDSU. Of course, research, scholarship and creative activity are a core component of SDSU’s land-grant mission. SDSU is a Space Grant as well as a Sun Grant university with programs in remote sensing, geospatial sciences and engineering and renewable energy. Our involvement in numerous EPSCOR programs provides linkages to several federal research programs.

This Graduate Catalog is a valuable resource to learn about SDSU’s graduate programs, policies and procedures. SDSU’s web page http://catalog.sdstate.edu/index.php?catoid=19 is also an important resource to additional information about the college, departments and faculty.
