Human Sciences

Program Description
The Graduate Programs in Human Sciences provide advanced, professional education and research expertise that focuses on improving individual, family, and community well-being. Masters students learn to use data for insight, improvement, and innovation. Their preparation makes them more aware, flexible, and proactive toward rapidly changing consumer profiles so that they will deliver an improved experience to customers and clients in their chosen specialization. The programs in Human Sciences offers specializations in Adult Development in the Workplace, Family and Community Services, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Family Financial Planning, and Merchandising. The degree granted for each is the Master of Science in Human Sciences.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Master of Science degree in Human Sciences, students will:

  • Demonstrate comprehension of the discipline’s body of knowledge including current research;
  • Articulate the research process and application of research skills;
  • Demonstrate appropriate oral presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate about his/her research and field of study;
  • Demonstrate appropriate writing skills including the ability to present research in a technically correct format;
  • Utilize higher order thinking skills including the ability to synthesize and integrate information and ideas; and
  • Demonstrate advanced skills in locating, utilizing, and synthesizing information from a variety of sources.

Course Delivery Format
Human Sciences students complete coursework on campus, in field-based internship or practicum settings, and online. Many program options are offered online through the GPIDEA consortium of eleven Land-Grant institutions located in the Midwest. Students take course work from most or all institutions including: North Dakota State University, South Dakota State University, Montana State University, Iowa State University, University of Nebraska, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, Texas Tech, Michigan State University, University of Missouri, and Colorado State University. All GPIDEA courses are delivered via distance education.
