Department Overview
The Department focuses on a student-centered curriculum that provides a strong foundation in pharmaceutical sciences. In addition, the department has a strong undergraduate research program. These prepare graduates for academic, industry, and research careers in the US and other countries.

The highly talented and dedicated faculty members provide quality education and research training in the pharmaceutical sciences. The department has an active research program in cancer, cardiovascular, neuropharmacology, immunology, and eye diseases. The multidisciplinary research expertise includes medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, and drug delivery systems.

Department Objectives

  • To provide high quality education for the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, professional Doctor of Pharmacy program, and the Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • To maximize teaching, learning, and scholarship through technology and broad-based improvement of physical facilities.
  • To support and develop high quality faculty.
  • To develop local, regional, national, and international collaborations.
  • To build and sustain excellence in scholarship and research leading to improved healthcare and economic development.

Facilities and Services
The department is housed in the new Avera Health and Science Center. The department is fully equipped with the state of the art-equipment for carrying out pharmaceutical and biomedical research. The faculty have individual research laboratories in the newly remodeled Avera Health Science Building. The department also has a shared cell-culture and research instrumentation facility. The department houses the Translational Cancer Research Center. This is a collaborative center between the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Sanford Research to develop new diagnostic, preventive, and treatment approaches for various types of cancer. The department also has a partnership with the Avera Institute for Human Genetics. The department provides services to companies through facility-user agreement and continues to seek strategic partnerships with other Universities, research institutions and pharmaceutical industries.
